The moon was rising as Dave left the outskirts of Pallet Town behind him, eager to be on his way and begin his journey. Sure, his mum had always told him to try and move in the day, but what did she know. He grinned as he looked down the path ahead of him, winding its way between the trees and rolling hills. Adventure!

Stopping for a moment, Dave pulled out his shiny new PokéBall and tossed it casually ahead of him. A flash of red later, a small bird was flying around, chirping cheerfully - it darted upwards, momentarily framed against the fall of night, before swooping down and landing at his feet. Pidgey. His Pidgey.

Grinning inanely, he pulled out his PokéDex, eager to learn about his new companion.

"Pidgey is a Flying Pokémon. Among all the Flying Pokémon, it is the gentlest and easiest to capture. A perfect target for the beginning Pokémon Trainer to test his Pokémon's skills. Pidgey's Gust power creates tornadoes. It also has a Sand-Attack."

"I think I'll call you Pressly." Dave mused aloud. The Pidgey chirped in agreement before hopping onto Daves shoulder, perching there happily.

"Right, Pressly! We should get going if we want to kick this adventure off. Bring me that horizon!" With that, Dave and his new companion began striding purposefully down the route.

As Dave walks down the route, he can't help but notice how the scenery is changing, even though he's only been here a few minutes. At the setting of the sun, many Pokémon around the route are starting to shut down, making their ways back to their nests, while others are busy gearing up for the night's activity ahead. A few Rattata dart along the treeline, catching Pressly's eye.

Spotting movment, the Flying-type chirps, causing Dave to look round as well, spotting the purple tails receding into the woods. Shaking his head at the missed opportunity, the new trainer turns back to the route ahead, except now there's an obstacle on the path. A young man, probably in his early teens was eyeing the jacket-wearing trainer with interest. Seeing that he was now facing him, the newcomer walked up to Dave, before greeting him.

"Good evening. I take it you just started out on a Pokémon journey, judging by you leaving Pallet Town? That's awesome, I just did the same! I'm Aaron, and how about we commemorate this by having a battle?" With this, the stranger pulls his own PokéBall from his belt, and releases his Starter: A Meowth, who begins to meticulously cleat himself, not really interested in current events, as is so common in cats.

Looks like Dave has his first battle on his hands, with cat vs bird. But what will he do now?

"Aaron huh? I'm Dave, good to meet ya!"

Dave flipped out his PokéDex, eager to learn more about the small white cat preening itself in the moonlight.

Meowth, the Scratch Cat Pokémon. Meowth loves to roam at night to gather coins and other objects that sparkle, but it spend most of the daylight hours sleeping.

"You ready for this, Pressly?" The bird Pokémon chirped in agreement, jumping down into the short grass between the two novice trainers. His first battle... a shiver of excitement ran down Dave's spine. A light gust of wind sent ripples through the grass and ruffled his hair in what Dave hoped was an appropriately dramatic fashion.

Trainer and Pokémon alike held each others gaze across the small stretch of grass between them. Silence held sway, but for a moment.

"Pressly, sand attack and tackle!"

"Alright Meowth, let's clip that bird's wings! Growl, before responding with a Scratch!"

Pressly has a good start, flapping his wings to kick up a Sand Attack, the debris getting in the feline's eyes. Meowth yowls in discomfort, before turning it into a Growl. Pressly seems a bit affected, but he knows he has the sight advantage as he Tackles into the opposing Normal-type. Blinking a bit, Meowth's sight is still a bit blurry, but he's up close, managing to land a Scratch on the Pidgey's belly, causing Pressly to squawk a bit.

Both Pokémon have taken a hit, and used a light amount of energy, but are both fine, it could still go either way.

Which Aaron was going to do what he could to prove. "It's ok Meowth, just try to get your sight back while you Scratch him some more, then Scratch him again!"

What will Dave command in reply?

Dave watched the opening moves eagerly, the two Pokémon on fairly even terms. "Have to win this". Losing his first ever battle was not an option.

"Pressly, dodge that scratch then give it another sand attack!"

Still getting the sand out of his eyes, Meowth lunges forward for a Scratch, but Pressly uses his aerial maneuvers to dodge the attack easily. Clearing his vision, the feline sees his foe, running forward for another Scratch, while the Pidgey has other ideas. Another Sand Attack later, and Meowth's back where he started, his swipe just falling short of the target.

No damage that round, all about energy, with Meowth panting from those missed swipes, though Pressly's only looking a bit better off.

Aaron looks a bit miffed at his Pokémon's failed attacks, but decides to wait to see what Dave will do now.

Still no clear advantage here. Dave couldn't risk messing this up.

"Quick Meowth, Scratch him, then focus on clearing your eyes!" Aaron orders.

Pressly takes advantage of his blinded foe, charging in for a strong Tackle, knocking the Scratch Cat back. Meowth manages to get a Scratch in as he falls back, but it's light damage compared to what he's taken. The Pidgey then utilises his power of flight, getting some air, while his opponent blinks and rubs his eyes, slowly restoring his sight.

Meowth took a goot hit there, looking a bit more battered, compared to Pressly's slight health decrease. Both are ok for energy, having used a light amount.

"You can't do much while it's up there, Meowth. So just Growl. If he comes back down, give him a Scratch!" commands Dave's opponent. What will he order in response?

Dave grinned. The aerial advantage could prove decisive here - he could feel it in his gut. Hit and run tactics were his best bet.

"Alright Pressly, drop down for a sand attack to throw him off scratch, then tackle!"

{OOC: Dropping the size thing cos annoying. Also, been encourged to get you to make longer posts. So.. post more, plz? c: }

Unsure what to do against an airborne foe, Meowth Growls his annoyance. Pressly doesn't care too much, dropping back down for another Sand Attack, the Scratch Cat finding his eyes full of dirt once more, yowling in irritation. This means he can't see, so blindly runs at where he last saw the Pidgey for a Scratch but instead gets bowled over by the avian's Tackle for his troubles.

Pressly used a bit more energy there, starting to pant a little, but took no damage. Meowth, however, is looking battered, especially from that strong last Tackle.

Aaron looks worried for his Pokémon. It seems like this battle may well be over soon, but what will Dave tell Pressly to do?

OOC: Sure. Sorry :p, used to ASB plus not really been in the mood for long updates, but it turns out I actually passed my exams somehow so less moping xD.

Dave looked on as Pressly dived, kicking up a plume of sand once more at the opposing Meowth with his wings. The cat Pokémon took a swipe at Daves new companion, but struck only air. Dave couldn't help but fist pump as the retaliatory tackle struck home. The small bird chirped, slightly out of breath. They couldn't afford to back down now.

However, timing was everything, and Dave felt this wasn't quite the right time to end it. No point taking risks - they had to wait for the opportune moment.

"Pressly, let's do this! Tackle it then fly up again!"

Hit and run tactics had worked once, after all.

"C'mon Meowth, we can do this! Scratch, then focus on clearing you eyes again!"

Pressly presses his advantage, another Tackle slamming the Scratch Cat for more damage, but Meowth manages to Scratch at the Pidgey's side in response, just catching the bird as he flies past. Pressly then gets out of harm's way, flying up high, while Meowth rubs his eyes, managing to get his vision back again, but he looks severely battered now.

It looks like this is in the bag, as Meowth can barely stand, while Pressly's still panting, but a lot better healthwise.

"It's gotta come down sometime, Meowth! Show no mercy with a double Scratch attack!" commands Aaron, going all-out.

Pressly struck once more with another tackle, taking a glancing scratch as he passed. The two Pokémon separated, the Pidgey swiftly gaining altitude whilst the Meowth tried desperately to clear its tear filled eyes. Pressly circled overhead. The Meowth waited, looking for the perfect time to strike. Time to finish this.

"Pressly, time to end this! A diving tackle, then go for another tackle!"

Dave clenched his fist, hoping he hadn't just made a big mistake.

Meowth stands ready as Pressly divebombs him. The feline swipes with his claws, Scratching at the bird, but not enough to kill the momentum of the Tackle the Pidgey nails him with, throwing him to the ground. The Normal-type struggles to his feet, but a final Tackle from Pressly proves too much, and Meowth slumps backward, swirls in his eyes, unable to continue.

Level Up for Pressly!

"Aw, nuts! Just too strong!" cries Aaron, as he rushes to his Pokémon's side. "Ah, great battle Meowth, you're gonna get even stronger, I know it!" Recalling his starter, the lad walks up to Dave, where Pressly has perched on his trainer's head, looking tired but happy.

"Great battle, dude! I see I have a lot to learn, thanks for showing me that. Meowth and I are gonna get a lot stronger, you'll see. Here, take this." At this, he hands 300 PokéDollars over to Dave, as well as a weird fruit. "That's a Sitrus Berry. I thought that Meowth could have it after the battle, and feel a lot better, but he needs a PokéCentre more than that. Here, you take it, your Pidgey deserves it." The young trainer turns, beginning to walk away, stopping before he merges with the gloom of the dark route ahead. "Oh yeah, I'll show you next time, seeing how we're rivals and all now. See ya!"

Dave and Pressly look after him, until he fades into the shadow of the moonlit path. It's getting late now, and Pressly seems tired, eyeing the berry obviously.

So what will the new trainer do now?

Pressly's victory produced what can only be described as a minor seizure from Dave. On closer inspection one might conclude it was a victory dance - for a very loose definition of dancing.

"You did it Pressly!" The Pidgey flew up and landed once more on his head, obviously tired but pleased with himself. Aaron got up from checking over his Meowth and took a step forward, extending a hand.

"Great battle, dude! I see I have a lot to learn, thanks for showing me that. Meowth and I are gonna get a lot stronger, you'll see. Here, take this." Dave pocketed the PokéDollars and inspected the odd looking berry he'd just been handed. "That's a Sitrus Berry. I thought that Meowth could have it after the battle, and feel a lot better, but he needs a PokéCentre more than that. Here, you take it, your Pidgey deserves it."

"Cheers. Good battle." Dave grinned as the other trainer walked away, fading into the night. Just before he went out of sight, he stopped and turned.

"Oh yeah, I'll show you next time, seeing how we're rivals and all now. See ya!"

A rival... hell yeah!. Famous rivalries flashed through his mind - Red and Blue, Johanna and Lila... they would make this a rivalry worth remembering. He just hoped Aaron was up to the challenge.

A tired chirping broke into his daydreaming.

"Oh, of course. Sorry little buddy." Dave held up the sitrus berry, which Pidgey swiftly plucked from his fingers. Dave winced, the sharp beak catching his thumb. "Ow!" The apologetic chirp came amongst a mouthful of food. "It's fine, Pressly."

Turning towards what he thought was the direction of Viridian, Dave resumed his walking, wondering what else lay in store.

Scarfing down his treat, Pressley instantly feels restored, chirping happily as he flaps his re-invigorated wings. It all seems good, and the two press on, the moon rising higher in the sky. Fortunately, it's full tonight, providing enough light to see by. In the distance, lights of buildings are visible, though Dave would have to walk a fair distance to Viridian City. No time to waste then!

As they make their way along, it was clear that the nightlife is up and about. Several Rattata ae visible, but scatter as soon as the travelling pair come close. Most flowers are closed for the night, but a few white ones open, and are descended upon by swarms of Venomoth, licking up the rich nectar as they unwittingly pollinate the plants, before flapping away, scattering pollen through the night air as Dave and Pressly pass by.

After a good while, the lights seem brighter, and the outlines of the buildings against the night sky are larger. The two pause, resting against a tree for a breather, feeling somewhat tired with it being very late in the day. Pressly nuzzles into Dave's neck, his feathers tickling and warm. Then something else presses against the other side of his neck. Something soft... and warm... and moist.

Yelling in shock, the trainer jumps forward, spinning around. The soft, pink thing reels in behind a tree, and a creature steps forward. It too is large, soft, and pink, and the appendage that was attempting to nuzzle with Dave is revealed to be a huge tongue, which sticks out of its owners mouth to better sense the world. Leaving the trees, the Lickitung looks around, presumably in search of food, before settling on the trainer, narrowing his eyes. Can it smell food on Dave's person? Or perhaps it's the lingering scent of that berry Pressly ate earlier. Either way, it's clear that this hungry Pokémon wishes to battle.

Faced with his first wild encounter, what will Dave do now?

Dave looked eagerly on at the Venomoth, but doubted Pressly could take on a fully evolved Pokémon. Not yet anyway. The faint scent of pollen wafted over as the pair reluctantly passed the flowers by.

A short while later and it was definitely past time for another breather. Dave had never realised travelling would be so tiring. It was alright for Pressly, perched atop his head - now that was style. What Dave really needed, he'd decided, was a larger Pokémon upon whose head he would balanced, who in turn would balance upon another Pokémon, and so on ad infinitum. Amusing, but hardly practical. He didn't have that many PokéBalls to hand.

Pressly nuzzled against Dave's neck. Suddenly on the other side of his neck, he felt something moist against the other side of his neck. He jumped up in alarm. Looking around, he quickly found himself face to face with a large, pink blob that seemed all tongue and tummy. Dave whipped out his PokéDex.

Lickitung, the Licking Pokémon. It uses a tongue that is more than twice the length of its body to battle, as well as to gather food.

"Alright, a Lickitung. Pressly, you good to battle?" The pidgey chirped its agreement. "Let's go with sand attack to tackle!"

As the two prepare for their first wild Pokémon battle, the moon rises even higher in the sky, almost in preparation to provide more light to see by, while also displaying how late it is. With orders issued, the Pidgey springs off his trainer's shoulder, and into action.

Swooping down to the ground, Pressly kicks up a Sand-Attack into the wild Pokémon's face. The dust and debris irritates the Lickitung's eyes, and reduces his vision, meaning his attempt at a Lick of the bird goes wide. This also means that the Pidgey can land a Tackle, bouncing away from the larger creature. Blindingly looking for his assailant, Lickitung charges in for a Tackle, getting a partial hit on the Pidgey, before he manages to clear the worst of the sand from his eyes.

Lickitung took more damage, and also used a bit more energy. But both combatants are reasonably fresh.

Now able to see his opponent, the wild creature extends his tongue, going for another Lick. What will Dave do in response?

Dave grinned as the Lickitung's attack lashed the air a foot to Pressly's left. The two Pokémon exchanged tackles and began circling.

Once more the pink Pokémon tongue lashed out towards his partner.

"Quick Pressly, dodge that lick by flying up high, then drop an air cutter!"
